accessing history ... n. morozova.

from 1992 to 1994, nina led a normal life as a happy toddler with her parents irina and pyotr. they were a secretary and doctor, respectively. however, one single night in november of 1994 changed the course of her life forever. while she and her mother were asleep and her father was working the night shift, she was stolen from her home. she was then given to a pair of agents loyal to dreykov — yuliya sudayeva and mikhail morozov. given that she was at the tender age of just two years old during this occurence, this was not something that nina could ever recall. the pair became the only parents she’d ever really know. when they had taken her, they already had a five year old girl with them, named viktoria.

immediately, the “family” of four relocated to a small town in northern minnesota in the united states. there they lived generally under the radar, prolonging the ruse of a nuclear family. a year later, when nina was three, another girl was sent to them. her name was anastasia and she was two years old. given their close ranges in age, the three girls were incredibly close throughout their brief and strange childhoods. they did everything together and were practically inseparable. this was especially true of nina and anastasia, who shared a room together in their house. night after night, they slept next to each other in matching twin sized beds. during their time in the united states, the family lived under aliases in order to ‘americanize themselves’. they adopted the surname ‘winters’. nina maintained her first name, viktoria became victoria, anastasia became simply anna, yuliya became julia, and mikhail became michael.

the girls believed they lived a normal life. they didn’t know their mother and father were preparing and raising them for a nightmare. at night, yuliya and mikhail slept in separate rooms after pretending to go to bed together. truthfully, the pair could barely get along. yuliya had always been cold and disconnected, but she was excellent at faking a maternal nature when it was necessary. mikhail, on the other hand, slowly began to truly care for the girls. he did consider himself to be their father — a sentiment he never explicitly shared with yuliya until years later. the matriarch of the group remained calculating and unattached from the others. she often drank at night, complaining about having to raise three children. mikhail elected to ignore this behavior and let the girls take his last name.

time passed and the girls continued to live the unknowing charade of their lives until viktoria was handed over first to dreykov and the red room program. the loss of their older sister frightened nina and anastasia. however, they themselves only had a couple of years after viktoria’s departure before nina was handed over and then anastasia. once there, nina did receive their variant of the super soldier serum like the other widows. her training began, and she barely crossed paths with her sisters during this time. they’d see each other in passing, but rarely spoke to one another.

more years full of brutal training and manipulation passed until she finally ‘graduated’ at eighteen years old. viktoria had done so three years prior, unbeknownst to her. anastasia would follow the year after. although, her tenure would be cut quite short. she was loyal to the program until the end, but she was the weakest of the trio. after a failure on a mission in 2012, she was deemed a liability by dreykov. she was forced by him to take her own life. nina and viktoria wouldn’t find about her demise until 2016. however, she didn’t go unmourned.

elsewhere, mikhail received word of anastasia’s fate. already teetering on the edge of defecting, this was the tipping point for him. he spent time crafting a plan that would help him succeed in his escape. he managed to slip away and created a new identity for himself, living in the england. he was there for a year before yuliya tracked him down, sent there to kill him. after a nasty fight, she failed. instead, it was her that met a grim fate. mikhail killed her in the process of trying to defend himself. he’d been trying to talk her down, not wanting to fight her. but she didn’t back down. and he took it as a betrayal of their family. the family she never really believed in. not like him.

in 2016, nina was out on a mission in london, unknowingly being tracked down by a defected widow. she was confronted and put up a hell of a fight. she sliced a nasty gash into the other woman’s left thigh, among other injuries. but the defector used a moment of brief distraction as an opportunity to break a vial of red dust near nina. the effect took place immediately. nina snapped out of dreykov’s control like a lion freed from a cage. startled, she took off and fled, leaving the other former widow injured, but alive. she was found seven weeks later by mikhail, who had begun fervently searching for her and viktoria. the pair had a heartfelt reunion, although it quickly turned bittersweet when mikhail told nina about anastasia and yuliya’s fates. despite the woman not wanting to be a mother, she was never anything but that to the girls. it was incredibly difficult for nina to understand the the truth.

viktoria found them before they found her. she was only recently freed. and her freedom had come about at the red room academy. she’d returned to mentor a select group of girls a mere day before the arrival of natasha romanoff and yelena belova. mikhail and nina could barely believe it when she told them that the red room was destroyed and dreykov was dead. they were finally fucking free. for good this time. nina and viktoria stayed in london with mikhail for a year. after that, nina decided to go off on her own. she needed to find herself after spending years under the influence and control of someone else. so she packed up her scarce belongings and made it to new york city in the united states.

she attempted to live a normal civilian life for a couple of months. she began to attend therapy, enrolled in college with professionally and exceptionally forged transcripts and credentials. but still, something inside her could never quite settle for a normal life after all she’d been through. resentment, anger, trauma, and guilt continued to plague her. one late night, on her way home from a bar, she encountered a group of men assaulting a young woman. disgusted and enraged, she took all three of them on in a fist fight and won. she left them there in that alley, bruised, bleeding, and no doubt with broken bones — but alive and suffering. this encounter was the start of something entirely new for her. she began to prowl the streets every night, watching and striking out at cruel and evil people — especially men.

ever since then – every punch, every stab, every bullet to a predator fills her with a sense of retribution and satisfaction.

but will it ever be enough to make her feel whole again?
